This exceptional mid-19th century historical map, issued by the renowned German publishing house Justus Perthes, forms part of Karl von Spruner’s influential historical atlas. Compiled by Karl von Spruner and refined by Heinrich Theodor Menke, and engraved with remarkable precision by Wilhelm von Alt, it reconstructs the ancient Near East using classical historical sources.
The map depicts Armenia, Mesopotamia, Babylonia, Assyria, and surrounding regions as they existed in antiquity, layering historical kingdoms and provinces rather than modern political borders. The Tigris and Euphrates river systems structure the composition, with key cities such as Babylon, Nineveh, and Assur clearly marked within their ancient contexts.
Each map is hand-laid on linen, enhancing durability and preserving colour over time. The linen backing also allows you to iron the reverse to remove folds and creases.
